Pelekium versicolor (hornsch. ex Müll.hal.) A.touw

Species

Bryophytes > Hypnales > Thuidiaceae > Pelekium

Characteristics

Plants rather small, remotely to densely bipinnate (a few of the stronger branchlets sometimes bearing some side branchlets), yellowish green to dark green or brownish. Stem procument to arching, up to c. 4 cm long. Paraphyllia mostly dense, short and simple, terminal cell mostly truncate, occasionally rounded or short-acute. Stem leaves 0.25-0.55(-0.6) by (0.2-)0.25-0.35 mm, cordate-triangular to broadly cordate-triangular, mostly strongly incurved when dry, patent to somewhat homomallous when moist, weakly to rather strongly longitudinally plicate both wet and dry; apex gradually to abruptly acuminate; margin narrowly to broadly recurved near the base of the leaf, upwards becoming flat, papillate-crenulate to entire; costa strong, abaxially strongly prominent both wet and dry and mostly rough by projecting cell ends; leaf cells 7-15 by 3.5-7 µm, unipapillate; cells near the leaf base occasionally pluripapillate; cells near the leaf apex slightly longer and less strongly papillate to smooth; terminal cell pluripapillate. Branches up to c. 4 mm long; paraphyllia mostly scattered, occasionally dense or almost absent. Branch leaves up to 0.4 mm long, triangular-ovate to narrowly ovate, incurved when dry, spreading to incurved when moist; apex acute to weakly acuminate, in the distal leaves and those of the branchlets more abruptly narrowed, acute to rounded-acute; margin strongly papillate-crenulate; costa abaxially prominent, its distal cells often spinose and pluripapillate; leaf cells isodiametrical or nearly so, 5-7 µm across; papillae single, strong, sometimes curved. Inner perichaetial leaves up to 1.8(-2.2) mm long, longitudinally plicate to smooth, gradually subulate-acuminate; margin mostly weakly crenulate, occasionally nearly entire or bearing a few strong teeth, rarely spinose-subciliate. Seta 10-19(-23) mm long, reddish or orange, smooth to slightly rough near the base of the theca. Theca c. 1.0-1.5 mm long, elliptical, brownish to orange, inclined to horizontal, weakly to rather strongly curved. Endostome cilia in groups of 1-3, mostly united. Spores 10-17 µm across. Operculum c. 0.5-1.0 mm long. Calyptra c. 1.4-2.0 mm long.
