Characteristics

Shrublet or shrub, 0.5-4.0 m high; branched near base, young stems glabrous. Leaves imbricate, entire, coriaceous; variable according to geographic position, linear to cordate. Inflorescences spike-like, 6-14-flowered. Perianth: tube cylindric-campanulate, yellow, green, purplish; lobes ± a 1/3 as long as tube, triangular, becoming reflexed. Stamens: filaments erect, linear, ± as long as the elliptic-oblong connective; anthers ± oblong, slightly shorter than connective, with shortly papillate fissure margins. Ovary sessile, smooth, with 4 ascending ovules in each locule; style slender; stigma capitate, quadrangular, relatively large. Flowering time Aug.-May. Fruit a capsule, up to 7 mm long. Seeds 2.7 mm long.
