Characteristics

Leaves paired but appearing pseudoverticillate due to arrested leafy branchlets, 2–8 x 0.3–1.5 cm., lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, drying a distinct yellow-green, acute at the apex, cuneate at the base, hairy or glabrous; petioles obsolete; stipules with 3–9 linear-lanceolate flattened capitellate green segments 0.9–2 cm. long from a base 2 mm. long.

Calyx tube 1.5 mm. long, densely hairy, the limb tube up to 2.5 mm. long, the foliaceous lobe 0.9–1.4 cm. x 1.2–2.3 mm., lanceolate, remainder minute or linear, up to about 3 x 0.5 mm.
Corolla white; tube 3.5–5.5 cm. long, densely hairy outside; lobes 6–9 x 1.7–3 mm., narrowly oblong, glabrous to pubescent outside, the acuminate tips inflexed.
Erect herb with 4-several stems 40–75 cm. tall from a woody rootstock, pubescent to hairy or glabrous save for lines of short white hairs on some internodes.
Style exserted 2–6(9) mm. in long-styled flowers the 4–5 lobes 1.5–2 mm. long; there also seem to be flowers with both style and stamens included.
Fruiting inflorescence becoming spicate c. 4 cm. long; fruits drying dark, subglobose, 7–8 mm. long and wide.
Flowers apparently trimorphic in dense heads up to c. 10 cm. wide; peduncle 5.5–11 cm. long.
Filaments exserted 1 mm. in short-styled flowers, anthers livid blue.
