Characteristics

Leaves 1.5–4 x 1–5 cm., broadly elliptic or ovate to reniform or oblate, acute or subacute to ± rounded at the apex with often a short acumen, rounded to emarginate at the base, pubescent to hairy, particularly on the c. 10 arcuate subbasal or pinnate nerves; petiole obsolete or up to c. 2(5) mm. long; stipules with c. 4 linear fimbriae 1.5–4 mm. long.

Corolla bright blue, the tube more violet-blue; tube 1.4–1.9 cm. long, pubescent outside; lobes oblong, 4–8 x 1–3 mm., pubescent outside, mostly acuminate.
Inflorescences congested, ± capitate, mostly at least ± bifid and somewhat spicate, mostly 3–4 cm. long and wide; peduncle 2–17 cm. long.
Calyx tube oblong, 1.5–2 mm. long; lobes 5, the foliaceous one 2.5–5 x 1–2.5 mm., oblong-elliptic, the rest 0.5–1 mm. long.
Perennial herb with hairy ± prostrate stems up to 1.5 m. long, from a woody rootstock which is orange inside.
Filaments exserted c. 2 mm. in short-styled plants and style about 11 mm. long with lobes c. 2 mm. long.
Fruit drying dark, ellipsoid, 8 x 6.5 mm., ribbed in dry state, with 4–5-locular straw-coloured putamen.
In long-styled plants style exserted c. 1.5 mm. but lobes shorter, about 0.5 mm. long.
