Pentanopsis Rendle

Genus

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae

Characteristics

Small shrub with much branched stems. Leaves paired but sometimes appearing verticillate due to the presence of short undeveloped shoots; stipules sheathing the stem, adnate to the petioles, the apical margin fimbriate. Flowers medium-sized, dimorphic, solitary or in fascicles of 3 terminating short undeveloped shoots. Calyx-tube ovoid; lobes 4, linear-lanceolate. Corolla with long slender tube, narrowly funnel-shaped towards the apex, glabrous outside, sparsely hairy inside; lobes 4, oblong-elliptic to lanceolate, induplicate at the base in bud, densely covered all over the inside with blunt stubby hairs. Ovary 2-locular; ovules numerous on peltate placentas; style with bifid stigma just exserted in long-styled form, much shorter in the short-styled form; anthers not exserted in either form but at different levels in the tube or only the tips of the anthers exserted in the short-styled form. Capsule obovoid or ellipsoid, loculicidally dehiscent, only indistinctly beaked. Seeds brown, flattened.
