Cultivation

Origin: in Fullerton, Calif., by Lawrence W. Sherwood, Sherwood Specialty Nursery. Introd. in 1947. Plant patent 773; 30 Dec. 1947. Chance seedling; discovered among a number of trees grown from seeds of a Mexican seedling of unknown parentage planted about 1907. Tree: upright spreading; bears well; blooms 1 1/2 to 2 months before Fuerte. Now obsolete. Fruit: 8 to 12 oz, averaging 4 1/2 inches long and 2 1/2 inches in diam.; pyriform; skin bright purple, attractive, smooth, glossy; seed small; flesh pale yellow, flavor mild, buttery, oil content high, quality very good; ripens 15 Sept. in southern Calif.
