Characteristics

Leaf lamina 7.5–18 × 0.7–2.6 cm, linear-lanceolate to elliptic-lanceolate, acute at the apex, attenuate and cuneate at the base, rarely the lowermost leaves truncate to sagittate, glabrous or with some reflexed bristles on the midrib and margins; petiole 1–2.5 cm long, shorter on upper leaves, glabrous.

Flowers in dense, shortly pedunculate heads racemosely arranged in dichotomously branched panicles; peduncle short, slender with purplish-red gland-tipped hairs; bracts brown, scarious, ciliate on the margin.
Ocrea 2–4 cm long, ovate-lanceolate, generally glabrous, sometimes with ± abundant reflexed bristles, apex with a fringe of short reddish-brown setae.
An erect or semi-decumbent annual, or sometimes perennial herb, often rooting at the lower nodes.
Perianth white, pale pink or pink, 2.8–3 mm long, with 5 lanceolate lobes longer than the tube.
Stamens 5–7, included in the perianth; filaments c. 1 mm long; anthers 0.25 × 0.15 mm.
Nut brownish-yellow, ± dull, 1.75 × 1.5 mm, biconvex or trigonous, obscurely punctate.
Ovary 0.8–0.9 × 0.35–0.4 mm; styles 2(3), c. 0.6 mm long, united below the middle.
