Characteristics

Slender, erect, annual herb, hydrophyte or helophyte (growing in swamps), 0.2-0.7 m high; stems longitudinally grooved. Ocreae truncate, brownish, membranous, up to 20 mm long, longitudinally veined, upper margin ciliate. Leaves petiolate, lanceolate, base rounded, apex acuminate; glabrous, midvein and margins strigose. Inflorescence a lax, slender, ± dichotomously branched thyrse, total length up to 115 mm. Bracts small, glandular, shortly ciliate. Flowers 1-3 per bract. Perianth 5-lobed, rose pink or white. Stamens 5, included. Ovary 3-angled, styles 3-partite; stigmas capitate. Flowering time Jan.-Apr. Fruit a trigonous, smooth, shiny nut.
