Characteristics

A very large forest tree with a dense crown, up to 20 m or occasionally up to 35 m in height. Bark: pale yellowish grey, smooth, finely flaking; trunks of large specimens buttressed and often coppicing at the base; young growth with dense rusty hairs, branches smooth and grey. Leaves: 10-30 cm long, with 3 or 4 pairs of opposite leaflets plus the terminal one; leaflets 2-5 x 0.6-2 cm, hairless, dark green, lateral veins looping to the margin; apex and base tapering; petiolules and petiole present. Flowers: deep pink to purple, pea-shaped, in lax terminal sprays up to 15 cm long; calyx, buds and stalks covered with golden brown, velvety hairs. Fruit: a large, flat, woody, light brown, velvety pod, up to 12 cm long, hanging from the branches, conspicuous, dehiscent while still on the tree, (but the old pods may remain on the tree longer).

Large, evergreen, forest tree, 2.5-21.5 m high; producing a blood-red exudate when slashed. Leaves imparipinnate, 0.1-0.3 m long. Leaflets subopposite, 3 or 4 pairs, lanceolate to narrowly obovate, dark green, veins dark brown below, lateral veins looping to margin, apex acuminate.
