Characteristics

Sterile basal shoots conspicuous at anthesis, bearing petiolate spatulate lvs 1.5–4 cm; flowering stems diffusely spreading, 1–4 dm; lower lvs often spatulate and with petiole-like base, the upper ones lanceolate to oblong, sessile or nearly so; cymes loose and open, few-fld, glandular-hairy; cal glandular-hairy, its linear lobes usually outcurved; cor red-purple, 2.5–3 cm wide; style elongate; 2n=24. Moist woods, chiefly in the mts., also on the piedmont; Pa. and s. O. to Ga. Apr., May.
