Cultivation

Origin: uncertain; probably o.p. seedling found near Mecca, Calif., between 1900 and 1920; developed as variety by M.R. Sheets and J. Wise. Name selected due to alleged resemblance to Egyptian variety with that name. Tree: Fruit: soft type; large, 46-54 x 27-29 mm, oblong-oval to oblongovate; skin thin and tender, yellow when immature, amber to reddish-brown at maturity; flesh soft; flavor mild and pleasing; ripens early (a little later than Khadrawy). Yields similar to Deglet Noor.
