Small, leafless plants, orange-brown; internodes terete, stout, 2-3 cm long; nodes somewhat swollen; basal cataphylls absent. Monoecious. Inflorescences clustered at nodes, to 1.5 cm long in fruit; peduncle mostly simple, 0.2-0.4 cm, sometimes with several sterile internodes, fertile internodes 1-several, thick; flowers mostly 3 per fertile bract, apical flower above fertile bract male at least at times, others female. Fruit ellipsoid, 0.6 x 0.4 cm, perianth segments closed.
