Characteristics

Corolla (2)2.5–3.5 cm long, yellow, marked orange to red at base and on the lobes or wholly red, lepidote-puberulous in bud, glabrescent above and on basal swelling; apical swelling of bud 2–2.5 × 2 mm; ovoid to globose, basal swelling 2–4 × 2–3 mm, with tube abruptly constricted above for several mm; lobes erect, 6–6.5 mm long; tips 2 × 1.2 mm, elliptic, hardened inside.

Leaves opposite to somewhat alternate; petiole 5–20 mm long; lamina brownish-violet to blue-green at first, maturing dark bronze-green, coriaceous, 7–20 × 3–9 cm, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, ± slightly acuminate, acute, cuneate to more generally rounded, truncate or slightly cordate at base, early glabrescent, with 5–9 pairs of lateral nerves.
Umbels in axils and at old nodes below, 2–4-flowered; peduncle 1–4 mm long; pedicels 0.5–1.5 mm long; bract ovate, 1–1.2 mm long, lepidote-puberulous.
Style slender, slightly broadened opposite filaments, minutely papillate; neck 0.5–0.8 mm long; stigma small, narrower than shoulders of style.
Branches mostly pendent, up to 2 m long; branchlets soon thickening, early glabrescent, smooth and shiny.
Anthers 0.75–1.75 mm long, with 3–4 scarcely discernible cells in each row.
Berry blood-red, 7–8 × 5–6 mm, obovoid-ellipsoid; seed cherry-red.
Calyx 0.3–0.7 mm long, obscurely toothed, ciliate.
Receptacle 1–2 mm long, lepidote-puberulous.
