Characteristics

A perennial herb up to 35 cm tall, dioecious or rarely monoecious; stems several, clustered, arising from a vertical thickened woody rootstock. Lead shoots and lateral shoots smooth or minutely asperulous, terete, glabrous. Lateral shoots 4-12(20) cm long, usually subtended by foliage leaves, ± vertically oriented. Foliage leaves of the lateral shoots usually ± distichous; petioles 0.3-0.5 mm long; stipules 1-1.5(2) cm long, linear-lanceolate, subentire, pinkish; blades 0.3-1.5 x 0.1-0.5 cm, elliptic-ovate to-lanceolate, acute or subacute, rarely obtuse, usually rounded at the base, margin somewhat thickened, revolute, chartaceous, glabrous or sometimes minutely scaberulous along the midrib and nerves beneath; lateral nerves in 2-6(7) pairs, looped within the margin, not prominent above, fairly prominent beneath. Male flowers in 1-3-flowered axillary cymules; pedicels 3-3.5 mm long, capillary; sepals 5, 1.5 x 1.25 mm, obovate, white or pinkish with a red midrib; disk glands 5, 0.2-0.3 mm across, free, flat, thin, smooth, transversely ovate, ± truncate; stamens 5, united at the base, c. 1 mm long, the free parts of the filaments c. 0.6 mm long, erect, anthers 0.25 mm across, horizontal, transversely dehiscent. Female flowers solitary; pedicels 2 mm long, extending to 4-5 mm in fruit, slender, expanding apically; sepals 5(6), 1-1.5 x 0.75-1 mm, slightly accrescent in fruit, elliptic, reddish-pink with whitish margins and a green midrib; disk 0.8-1 mm in diameter, annular, thin, undulate; ovary 0.7 mm in diameter, sessile, depressed-subglobose, smooth; styles 3, 0.5 mm long, united at the base, spreading, bifid, stigmas recurved. Fruit c. 2 x 3 mm, depressed 3-lobed, smooth, often reddish-tinged. Seeds 1.3 x 1 x 1 mm, segmentiform, yellowish-brown, with c. 15 rows of minute shiny brown tubercles reticulately connected on the dorsal facet, and c. 12 concentric rows on each ventral facet.
