Phyllanthus omahakensis Dinter & Pax

Species

Angiosperms > Malpighiales > Phyllanthaceae > Phyllanthus

Characteristics

An erect to procumbent or semi-prostrate annual herb up to 30 cm tall or 60 cm across, glabrous, asperulous or papillose-pilose, monoecious; stems often much-branched from the base. Lowest nodes of the lead shoots bearing leaves and secondary lead shoots, the upper bearing scale leaves and lateral shoots. Lateral shoots 2-8 cm long. Scale leaves 1 mm long, subulate; stipules 1 mm long, linear-lanceolate. Foliage leaves mostly distichous; petioles 0.3-0.5 mm long; stipules 1-1.25 mm long, linear to filiform, cream-coloured to pale brownish or reddish. Leaf blades 3-15 x 1-4.5 mm, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acute, subacute or obtuse, sometimes mucronulate, rounded at the base, margins sometimes minutely asperulate-serrulate, chartaceous, glabrous on both surfaces, glaucous; lateral nerves in c. 5 pairs, but usually not visible. Male flowers solitary or paired in the axils of the lower half of the lateral shoots, female flower solitary in the upper axils. Male flowers: pedicels 0.75 mm long; sepals 6, 1.5 x 0.8-1 mm, oblong, rounded, pale greenish-white; disk glands 6, 0.2 mm in diameter, circular, very thin, flat, smooth; stamens 3, filaments connate into a conical column c. 1 mm high, anthers 0.4 x 0.3 mm, free, sessile, divergent, ellipsoid, longitudinally dehiscent. Female flowers: pedicels 1 mm long, extending to 2-3 mm in fruit; sepals 6, 1.2 x 0.75 mm, slightly accrescent to 2 x 1 mm in fruit, elliptic-oblong, rounded, green with white margins; disk 0.5 mm in diameter, shallowly 6-lobed, flat, smooth, only clearly visible in young flowers; ovary 0.6 mm in diameter, sessile, shallowly 6-lobed, subglobose, smooth; styles 3, united in the lower third, 0.75 mm long, erect, bifid, stigmas subglobose. Fruit 2 x 2.2-2.5 mm, subglobose, ± smooth to slightly granulate, often yellowish or reddish-tinged. Seeds 1.2-1.7 x 0.75-1 x 0.71.1 mm, rounded trigonous-to sharply triquetrous-segmentiform, yellowish-brown or tawny, with 14-20 shallow longitudinal ridges on the dorsal facet and 10-16 concentric ridges on each ventral facet, with innumerable transverse striae between them.
