Monoecious completely glabrous erect perennial herb or subshrub 75 cm. to 1.5 m. tall.. Stems dark purplish grey.. Orthotropic shoots terete, pale green, reddish tinged. Plagiotropic shoots 4–10(–18) cm. long, remote, slender, subterete.. Cataphylls triangular-lanceolate, 1.5 mm. long, dark reddish brown. Cataphyllary stipules lanceolate, 2.5–3 mm. long, acutely acuminate, subentire or irregularly denticulate, strongly auriculate on the outer side, the auricle downwardly produced, reddish brown.. Leaves of the plagiotropic shoots distichous; petioles 0.5–0.75 mm. long; blades elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, (0.2–)1–1.4(–1.6) cm. long, (1–)2–4(–8) mm. wide, acute, subacute or obtuse, mucronate, entire or subentire, rounded or cuneate, thinly chartaceous, lateral nerves 7–11 pairs, indistinct to slightly prominent above, fairly prominent beneath, green above, glaucous beneath, with red margins..
