Characteristics

Shrubs or trees with rather coriaceous entire or serrulate leaves; secondary nerves transverse, fine and close; stipules very small, soon falling. Flowers small, in lax axillary fascicles of racemes or rarely panicles of spikes. Sepals shortly connate at the base. Petals usually contorted, persistent and often indurated in fruit. Stamens 5(-10); filaments inserted on small thin disk. Ovary 5-locular, each locule with 2 ovules; style simple, the stigma shortly lobed. Capsule±globose with fleshy walls, septicidally dehiscent. Seeds ellipsoid, surrounded by a pale yellowish or reddish aril.
