Characteristics

Annual herb, stems c. 10-50 mm long, caespitose, erect, decumbent or spreading, leafy, pubescent with more or less patent eglandular hairs up to 0.4 mm long as well as very small (c. 0.1 mm) retrorse hairs. Leaves opposite below, alternate above, blade of lowermost few pairs c. 3-12 x 1.75-7 mm, elliptic, tapering to a petiolar part c. 1.5-15 mm long, upper leaves smaller and becoming ± sessile, margins obscurely to distinctly serrate, both surfaces thinly pubescent at first, hairs later confined to margins and midline, up to 0.5-0.75 mm long. Flowers up to c. 15 crowded in heads rapidly elongating into racemes, lowermost flowers in largest racemes distant. Bracts c. 3-6 x 1.2-2.25 mm, upper ones smaller, broadly to narrowly elliptic-oblong, adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, upper surface puberulous, lower glabrous, hairs on margins up to 0.4-1 mm long. Pedicels of lowermost flowers 0.5-1 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube c. 0.75-1 mm long, anticous lobe c. 1.25-1.6 x 1 mm, puberulous mainly on keels and margins with patent eglandular hairs up to c. 0.4 mm long, lobes (and top of capsule) often flushed purple. Corolla tube c. 1.25-2 x 1 mm, limb c. 1.75-2.5 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes c. 0.25-0.3 x 0.25-0.3 mm, anticous lobe c. 0.8-1 x 0.5-0.75 mm, all lobes elliptic-oblong, white or cream, posticous lip bearded at the base and possibly with a yellow patch there. Stamens 4, anthers 0.25-0.3 mm long. Stigma exserted. Capsules 2.5-3 x 2-2.25 mm Seeds c. 0.5-0.75 x 0.3-0.5 mm, irregularly colliculate and wrinkled, amber-coloured. Fruiting only by November.
