Characteristics

Annual herb 30-300 mm tall, stem simple to branched from the base and higher, branches usually ascending, occasionally decumbent, pubescent with short (c. 0.1 mm) ± retrorse eglandular hairs plus patent glandular hairs to 0.4 mm long and very occasional eglandular hairs c. 0.4-1 mm long, leafy with a strong tendency towards the development of dwarf axillary shoots. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, lowermost primary ones c. 15-30 x 1-2(-5) mm, smaller upwards, linear-oblong to narrowly elliptic, narrowed to the base, entire or with 1-4 pairs of teeth, both surfaces pilose, hairs up to 1 mm long, up to 2 mm on margins near base, plus very occasional glandular hairs. Flowers few to many in rounded heads terminating all the upper branchlets, shortly scapose below the heads, heads oblong in fruit, up to c. 20 mm long, all but the lowermost 1 or 2 flowers crowded. Bracts c. 3-9 x 1.2-3 mm, smaller upwards, elliptic to ovate-lanceolate, entire or the lowermost occasionally with 1 or 2 teeth, adnate to pedicel and base of calyx tube, pilose on both surfaces, a very few glandular hairs as well, hairs on margins up to 0.5-1.5 mm Pedicels of lowermost flowers c. 0.5-1 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, tube 1.5-2 mm long, anticous lobes 1.5-2 x 0.5-1 mm, forming a briefly notched lip, pilose all over, hairs up to c. 0.4-0.75 mm, a few gland-tipped hairs as well. Corolla tube 3-4.5 x 1-1.5 mm, broadening in the throat, limb (4-)5-7 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes (1-)1.5-2 x 1-1.75 mm, orange-yellow, bearded at base of lip and down back of tube, hairs often extending to the 2 lateral lobes, anticous lobe 2-3.25 x (1-) 1.25-1.75 mm, anticous lip creamy-coloured or possibly yellow. Stamens 4, anthers 0.75-1 mm long. Stigma well exserted. Capsules c. 3.5-4 x 2.5 mm Seeds c. 0.75 x 0.5 mm, 3-or 4-angled, colliculate and wrinkled on 1 or 2 faces, testa pallid (possibly eventually mauve-blue?), endosperm amber-coloured, visible through the testa.
