Characteristics

Annual herb, stems c. 50-300 mm long, simple to branched from the base, first stem erect, others decumbent, pilose, the hairs 0.5-1.5 mm long, retrorse to appressed on upper part, sometimes tending to spread on lower part, often glandular-puberulous as well on upper part, mostly leafy only in lower part. Leaves opposite or uppermost alternate, blade of lowermost few pairs 6-20(-30) x 3-12 mm, ovate to ovate-elliptic, abruptly or sometimes more gradually contracted into a petiolar part (2-)3-10(-13)mm long, smaller upwards and then sometimes narrowly elliptic or linear, margins obscurely to distinctly serrate, both surfaces pilose, hairs c. 1-2 mm long. Flowers up to c. 20 in small heads elongating into crowded racemes (lowermost flowers sometimes distant) solitary at the tip of nude scapes. Bracts c. 3-8 x 0.6-1.5(-3) mm, elliptic, oblong or subspathulate, adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, pilose, hairs 0.5-2 mm long, longest hairs on lower margins. Pedicels at base of inflorescence c. 0.5-1 mm long. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.5-1 mm long, anticous lobes 1.5-2.75 x 0.4-0.75 mm, pilose all over, hairs c. 0.4-1 mm long. Corolla tube 2-3 x 0.75-1 mm, limb 1.5-4.5 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.4-1 x 0.4-1 mm, anticous lobe 1-2 x 0.4-1.25 mm, all lobes elliptic oblong, palest cream-colour or white, possibly without any colour patterning other than the 2 upper lobes yellow, base of posticous lip bearded, the hairs sometimes extending to 2 or all 3 lobes of the anticous lip. Stamens 4, base of anticous filaments sometimes bearded with some hairs on the tube between the filaments, anthers 0.3-0.6 mm long, yellow. Stigma exserted. Capsules c. 3.5 x 2.5 mm Seeds c. 0.5-0.75 x 0.3-0.5 mm, obscurely angled, irregularly colliculate and wrinkled, pale cream-colour. Flowers between July and October, mainly in September.
