Characteristics

Annual herb, 45-400 mm tall, stems simple to well branched from the base, lower branches often decumbent, base becoming woody, upper parts herbaceous, leafy, pubescent, the hairs 0.5-1 mm long, often ± curled, retrorse. Leaves opposite, blade 3.5-30 x 3-20 mm, broadly elliptic or ovate, contracted below into a petiolar part 1.5-20 mm long, triplinerved, margins serrate, blade glandular-punctate, sparsely hairy chiefly on the margins, main veins and lower surface near the base. Flowers many in crowded heads rapidly elongating into long narrow dense racemes, only the lowermost flowers somewhat distant. Bracts 4.5-12 x 0.5-3 mm, usually sharply differentiated from the leaves, spathulate, lowermost with 1-2 pairs of teeth, lower margins with patent hairs c. 0.5-1 mm long, glandular-punctate like the leaves, adnate to pedicel and calyx tube. Pedicels 0.25-1(-1.5) mm long. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 1-1.5 (-2) mm long, anticous lobes 1.5-2 x 0.25-0.5 mm, keeled and more or less conduplicate in upper part, margins with patent hairs 0.5-1 mm long. Corolla tube 3-5 x 1-1.3 mm, broadening in throat, limb (4-)5-7 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.2-2 x 0.75-1.3 mm, anticous lobe 2.5-4 x 1-1.75 mm, all lobes oblong, mauve, orange patch below posticous lip and bearded there, the hairs running about halfway down the tube inside, a few hairs often present at base of anticous lip. Stamens 4, anthers 0.75 mm long. Stigma well exserted. Capsules 2.5-4 x 1.5-2 mm Seeds c. 0.5-0.75 mm long, irregularly colliculate, amber-coloured. May flower in any month.
