Phyllopodium heterophyllum Benth.

Annual herb, stems 50-300 mm long, simple and then erect or branched from the base, branches decumbent, ascending, or sometimes prostrate, pilose, hairs mostly 0.75-1.5 mm long, retrorse, sometimes appressed on upper parts, tending to spread on lower parts, sometimes glandular-puberulous as well, these hairs very small, patent, leafy at least below, sometimes becoming scapose upwards. Leaves opposite below, alternate above, blade of lowermost few pairs (8-) 13-34 x (2-)4-8(-12) mm, elliptic tapering ± gradually to a petiolar part c. 3-15(-24) mm long, diminishing in size (particularly width) upwards, becoming narrowly elliptic to linear and sessile, margins distinctly to obscurely serrate, upper surface thinly pilose, hairs on lower surface nearly confined to midrib, hairs c. 0.5-1.5 mm long. Flowers up to c. 9(-15) in small heads elongating into short racemes (the lowermost flowers then often distant), solitary at tips of nude or bracteate peduncles. Bracts c. 3.5-9 x 0.5-1.3 mm, more or less oblong or subspathulate, adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, glabrous or nearly so on the backs, thinly pilose on inner surface, long (l-2 mm) patent hairs on margins. Pedicels at base of inflorescences 0.5-1.25(-2) mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.75-1 mm long, anticous lobes 2-3 x 0.5-1 mm, pilose, hairs c. 0.5-1 mm long, mainly on margins and keels. Corolla tube c. 2.25-4 x 1-1.5 mm, limb 3.25-7 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.4-1.5 x 0.4-1.3 mm, anticous lobe 1.3-3.25 x 0.75-1.75 mm, all lobes elliptic-oblong, probably always creamy-coloured to pale yellow, base of posticous lip and inside of tube marked with patches of orange or yellow, outside of lobes often with dark blotching or feathering, base of posticous lip bearded, hairs sometimes extending to 2 or 3 of the anticous lobes. Stamens 4, base of anticous filaments sometimes bearded, with or without an arc of hairs linking bases of filaments, anthers 0.4-1 mm long, yellow or orange. Stigma exserted. Capsules 3.5-5.5 x 2-3 mm Seeds c. 0.5 x 0.3 mm, obscurely angled and colliculate, mauveish underlaid by the coppery-coloured endosperm. Flowering mainly in August and September, in fruit by October.
