Characteristics

Annual herb 40-300 mm tall, stem simple to branched from the base and higher, branches decumbent or ascending, pubescent with patent glandular hairs up to c. 0.4 mm long, eglandular hairs c. 0.1 mm long only on lower parts of stem, often only below the first pair of leaves, leafy, with a tendency towards the development of dwarf axillary shoots. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, lowermost primary ones 14-37 x (1-)2.5-5 mm, smaller upwards, narrowly elliptic, narrowed to the base, entire or with 1-3 pairs of teeth, both surfaces pubescent, hairs glandular, up to c. 0.4 mm long, long (up to 1-1.25 mm) eglandular hairs on margins near base. Flowers few to many in rounded heads terminating all the branchlets, shortly scapose below the heads, heads oblong in fruit, scarcely exceeding 10 mm long, crowded. Bracts c. 3-13 x 1.25-3.75 mm, smaller upwards, lowermost often leaf-like, otherwise ovate or ovate-oblong, frequently with 1-3 teeth, adnate to pedicel and base of calyx tube, glandular-pubescent on the backs, hairs c. 0.4 mm long, eglandular hairs on inner face and on margins, these up to 0.75-1 mm long. Pedicels of lowermost flowers up to c. 1 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx distinctly bilabiate, tube 1.1-1.75 mm long, anticous lobes 1.5-2 x 0.5-1.2 mm, forming an entire or very briefly notched lip, glandular-pubescent mainly on the keels, marginal hairs eglandular. Corolla tube 2.5-3 x 1-1.5 mm, broadening in the throat, limb 3.5-4 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.75-1.5 x 0.75-1 mm, orange-yellow, either glabrous at base of lip or thinly bearded, anticous lobe 1-2 x 0.75-1.5 mm, anticous lip probably white (see discussion below). Stamens 4, anthers 0.4-0.5 mm long. Stigma well exserted. Capsules c. 4 x 2.5 mm Seeds c. 0.75 x 0.5 mm, 3-or 4-angled, obscurely colliculate on one face, testa pallid over amber-coloured endosperm.
