Characteristics

Annual herb 40-250 mm tall, or occasionally tiny seedlings flowering, stem simple to branched from the base, these branches often decumbent (sometimes prostrate?), all branches branching above into corymbose compound inflorescences, stem pilose with eglandular hairs up to 0.5-1.5 mm long, retrorse to patent, often glandular-puberulous as well on upper parts, dwarf axillary shoots either wanting or ill-developed. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, blade of lowermost leaves c. 9-27 x 4-7 mm, oblanceolate tapering into a petiolar part c. 6-30 mm long, often roughly equalling the blade in length, upper leaves quickly shorter and narrower with the petiolar part much reduced, margins entire to sparingly toothed, both surfaces pubescent, pilose on the midrib below and on margins of petiolar part, these hairs up to 1.5-1.75 mm long. Flowers few to several in crowded heads c. 4-6(-7) mm in diam., ± oblong in fruit, terminating all the branchlets. Bracts 3-5 x 0.5-1.4 mm, smaller upwards, oblong to elliptic, adnate to pedicel and about halfway up calyx, puberulous on the backs, hairs on margins up to 0.5-1.25 mm long. Pedicels of lowermost flowers up to 0.5 mm long, shorter upwards. Calyx bilabiate, tube 1-1.5 mm long, anticous lobes 1.25-2 x 0.5-0.8 mm, anticous lip split 0.5-0.75 mm, rarely the posticous lobes free to the base, pubescent. Corolla tube 2.5-3.5 x 0.75-1 mm, broadening slightly in throat, limb 4-5 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-1.5 x 0.6-1.2 mm, anticous lobe 2-3 x 0.75-1.3 mm, all lobes oblong, usually mauve, sometimes white, bearded on posticous lip and down back of tube, the hairs often extending onto the lobes of the anticous lip. Stamens 4, anthers 0.5-0.75 mm long. Stigma well exserted. Capsules c. 2-3 x 1.5-2 mm Seeds c. 0.4-0.5 mm long, elliptic in outline, smooth, dark blue-grey.
