Characteristics

Annual herb, stems c. 40-150 mm tall, simple, either solitary or 24 from the base, pilose with coarse ± retrorse hairs up to 1-1.5 mm long, leafy only at the base, terminating in a long nude or remotely bracteate peduncle bearing a head of flowers. Leaves in 1-3 pairs near base of stem, in larger plants becoming alternate and bracteate upwards, c. 9-20 x 1.5-5 mm, elliptic or oblanceolate tapering to a petiolar part c. 1/3-1/2 the total leaf length, upper, alternate, leaves much smaller, sessile, margins entire to obscurely few-toothed, both surfaces pilose, hairs up to 1 mm long. Flowers sessile or almost so, crowded into solitary terminal heads c. 7-12 mm in diam. Bracts at base of inflorescence c. 5-9 x 0.8-2 mm, smaller upwards, subspathulate, apex either broader or narrower than base, adnate to calyx tube, shortly hispid in upper half becoming hirsute in lower half, these hairs up to 1.25-1.5 mm long, strongly patent to somewhat reflexed. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 1-2.5 mm long, anticous lobes 1.25-2 x 0.5-1 mm, anticous lip split c. 1-1.5 mm, hispid on keels, hairs up to 1 mm long, ± reflexed. Corolla tube 3.25-6 x 1-1.25 mm, widening in the throat, limb c. 5-8 mm across the lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-3.5 x 0.6-2 mm, anticous lobe 34.5 x 1.25-2.1 mm, corolla yellow, finely pubescent outside on tube and lower half of lobes, strongly bearded at base of posticous lip (and probably orange there) with some hairs on lateral lobes and running right down back of tube, hairs up to 0.5 mm long. Stamens 4, anther lobes 0.5-0.75 mm long. Stigma well exserted. Capsules and seeds unknown.
