Characteristics

Biennial or perennial herbs. Leaves mostly basal, ternatisect or more rarely pinnatisect, the upper leaves much reduced. Umbels few to numerous, pedunculate, compound, terminal and lateral; involucre and involucel conspicuous; bracts and bracteoles linear, entire or pectinate. Flowers polygamous, lateral umbels ♂. Calyx-teeth conspicuous. Petals emarginate above with a ± acute incurved apical lobule. Fruit covered with firm, vesicular papillae, dorsally compressed with prominent ribs, the laterals similar to the dorsals or expanded into a wing; commissure broad; vittae broad and shallow, clearly visible, solitary in the valleculae, 2 on the commissure; stylopodia shortly conical, styles rather stout and short; carpophore divided to the base. Endosperm broadly rounded dorsally, shallow, broadly channelled at the commissural face.
