Characteristics

Perennial herb with erect stems from prostrate base, up to 0.8(–l) m. high.. Stems little branched, glabrous.. Leaves of a pair subequal or one considerably smaller and with shorter petiole than the other; stipules persistent, broadly triangular, pointed, 0.8–2 mm. long; petiole 0.5–5.5 cm. long, glabrous or with scattered hairs in the distal part; lamina ovate to elongate or elliptic, 2.5–12.5 cm. long, 0.8–4.5 cm. wide, base usually ± oblique, subcordate to rounded, rarely cuneate, margin serrate, with 14–20 teeth on each side (more outside Flora area), each tooth usually regularly triangular, acute, not apiculate, leaf-apex long-acuminate, with the apical tooth 0.6–2 cm. long; basal pair of lateral nerves reaching apical tooth, lateral nerves (other than the basal pair) numerous, running straight from midnerve towards edge of lamina or giving off a few clearly weaker tertiary nerves, not disappearing into a network of tertiary nerves as in P. holstii; upper surface glabrous, with scattered, often inconspicuous linear cystoliths, lower surface with a few spreading hairs on the nerves and sometimes with hydatodes.. Inflorescences flattened, diffuse panicles, on peduncles 1–2 cm. long, flowering part up to 10 cm. long and 5 cm. wide, with small cymose glomerules; male inflorescences with 4–10 branches, glomerules 2–4 mm. in diameter; female inflorescence with (3–)5–10 branches, glomerules ± 2 mm. in diameter.. Male flowers on pedicels 0.4–0.8 mm. long; perianth ± 0.8 mm. in diameter, 4-merous, tepals without or with only weakly developed subapical appendage.. Female flowers subsessile, 0.8 mm. long; middle perianth-lobe rounded to acute, without subapical appendage, the 2 lateral lobes only 1/2 as long as the middle lobe.. Achene broadly ovoid, ± 0.8 mm. long, yellow to pale brown.
