Characteristics

Erect perennial herb with creeping basal part, up to 1 m. high or more.. Erect stems unbranched or little branched, glabrous.. Leaves of a pair subequal or one with much longer petiole than the other; stipules broadly triangular, persistent but inconspicuous, up to 0.8 mm. long; petiole 0.4–6.5(–8) cm. long, glabrous; lamina ovate to lanceolate, sometimes with oblique basal part, 1.2–8(–12) cm. long, 0.8–4.5(–7) cm. wide, with rounded or cuneate base, margin with 5–15(–18) teeth, each tooth with straight or slightly convex sides, acute, never markedly apiculate, leaf-apex long-acuminate, with an apical tooth up to 1.5(– 2) cm. long; lateral nerves numerous, basal pair reaching the apical tooth or the 1st or 2nd tooth from apex before joining the upper lateral nerves, other lateral nerves in the lower 2/3 of lamina branch and dissolve into a network of fine nerves towards the edge of lamina; upper surface glabrous, with regularly scattered linear cystoliths, lower surface glabrous with hydatodes.. Inflorescences much branched, panicles with the flowers in small, diffuse cymose clusters; ♂ inflorescences on peduncles 1–2 cm. long, flowering part 1.5–4.5 cm. long, with 2–4 branches, clusters up to 7 mm. in diameter; ♀ inflorescences more lax than the ♂ ones, on 1–2 cm. long peduncles, flowering part 2–5.5 cm. long, with 3–6 branches, clusters ± 2 mm. in diameter.. Male flowers on pedicels ± 1 mm. long; perianth ± 1 mm. in diameter, 4-merous, tepals with subapicular appendage.. Female flowers subsessile; perianth ± 0.8 mm. long, largest perianth-lobe lanceolate, acute, without appendage, the 2 lateral lobes only 1/2 as long.. Achene ovoid, compressed, 0.8–1 mm. long, sometimes with a flattened margin, brown.. Fig. 9/A.
