Species

Angiosperms > Rosales > Urticaceae > Pilea

Characteristics

Presumably perennial herb, up to 40 cm. high.. Stems prostrate and ascending, little branched, fleshy, glabrous, with a few scattered reddish glands and linear cystoliths in epidermis.. Leaves of a pair subequal to very unequal, sometimes one only 1/2 the size of the other, and with much shorter petiole; stipules broadly triangular, persistent, but inconspicuous, 6–8 mm. long; petiole 0.4–5 cm. long, glabrous, or with a few hairs arranged in tufts at connection with lamina; lamina ovate to elliptic, 1.2–8(–9) cm. long, 0.6–3.5(–4.7) cm. wide, base rounded, margin serrate, with 7–12 teeth on each side, each tooth with a convex or S-curved distal edge and a concave proximal side, apex of tooth usually markedly apiculate, leaf-apex acute or usually acuminate; lateral nerves numerous, basal pair of lateral nerves reaching the level of 2nd or 3rd tooth from apex before arching inwards and joining the upper lateral nerves, rarely the basal pair reach the apical tooth of lamina, lateral nerves above the basal pair dissolve in the lower 2/3 of lamina in a dense network of tertiary nerves; upper surface glabrous, with scattered, linear cystoliths, lower surface glabrous with scattered hydatodes.. Inflorescences unisexual, ± lax panicles, 0.6–6 cm. long, with few, alternate branches and flowers in small, ± diffusely cymose clusters; ♂ inflorescences: peduncle 0.8–1.3 cm. long, clusters usually few, up to 6 mm. in diameter; ♀ inflorescences more branched than the ♂ ones, clusters 2–3 mm. in diameter.. Male flowers on pedicels 0.6–1 mm. long; perianth ± 1 mm. in diameter, 4-merous, tepals with a subapical appendage.. Female flowers on pedicels ± 0.5 mm. long; perianth ± 1 mm. long, the middle lobe the longest, without subapical appendage, lateral lobes less than 1/2 as long.. Achene long, ovoid, laterally compressed, 1–1.5 mm. brown.. Fig. 9/F, p. 32.
