Pilostyles hamiltonii C.A.Gardner

Species

Angiosperms > Cucurbitales > Apodanthaceae > Pilostyles

Characteristics

Dioecious. Flowers (3.5–) 4.0–4.5 mm long, 3.2–3.6 mm diam., fleshy. Bracts 8–12, in two whorls, biseriate, ovate-orbicular to oblong, concave, entire or erose, dark burgundy or reddish purple; apex obtuse, pale yellow to brown. Tepals 4–6, imbricate, attenuate or constricted near base, cream or pinkish white (blood-red with cream apex reported by Dell 1984; possibly indicating they darken to a similar colour to bracts); apex obtuse. Gynandroecial column cylindrical, pale cream or pinkish; disc fleshy. Anthers biseriate under margin of apical disc. Ovary half-inferior or nearly superior, ovoid, pale pink; stigma ring-shaped on margin of apical disc. Berry ovoid-turbinate to almost conical, 3–4 mm diam., enclosed and hidden by bracts and perianth to maturity, dull reddish or red- to purple-brown.
