Characteristics

Undershrub or shrub 0.1–1.5 m high. Young stems hairy. Leaves alternate or opposite, shortly petiolate, at least sparsely hairy on abaxial surface, usually green. Inflorescence of terminal and/or axillary clusters or heads; clusters or heads compact, 4-many-flowered. Flowers bisexual or female, hairy outside, glabrous inside, yellow, greenish yellow or possibly sometimes dark red throughout or with red sepals and yellowish below. Hypanthium 3–7 mm long, circumscissile; style-portion 2–5 mm long or rarely (not in bisexual flowers) 1.5–2 mm long. Sepals spreading. Stamens inserted below sepals, subsessile in throat; anther locules introrse. Style included.
