Characteristics

Shrub usually 0.7–2.5 m but up to 4 m high. Stems glabrous. Leaves opposite, shortly petiolate, narrowly elliptic or nearly so, glabrous, concolorous. Inflorescence terminal, compact, few-to many-flowered; involucral bracts sessile, narrowly elliptic to ovate-elliptic, 2–30 mm long, 1–7 mm wide, usually deciduous, glabrous, leaf-like in colour. Flowers glabrous inside, white to yellow or greenish. Male flowers: hypanthium 3–7 mm long; sepals 1–2 mm long. Female flowers: hypanthium 1.5–2.5 mm long, splitting irregularly at base in fruit, all but base deciduous, style-portion reduced or poorly defined; sepals 0.2–1 mm long; ovary glabrous. Mature fruit succulent, naked.
