Shrub 0.1–1.5 m high, rarely prostrate. Leaves opposite, crowded, narrowly elliptic to obovate, glabrous, concolorous, green. Inflorescence terminal but sometimes on a very short lateral branchlet, compact, usually 4–12-flowered; involucral bracts 2 or 4, sessile, elliptic-obovate or broadly so, 2–6 mm long, 1–4 mm wide, glabrous, green. Flowers usually yellowish; pedicel densely hairy. Sepals glabrous. Male flowers: hypanthium 1.8–2.5 mm long; sepals 1–1.7 mm long. Female flowers: hypanthium 1.5–2.5 mm long, persistent or tardily splitting at base; sepals 0.8–1 mm long; ovary distally hairy. Fruit dry, enclosed or naked.
