Characteristics

Plants clumped or tufted, 1.0-2.5 m high; rhizomes spreading, unbranched or sparsely branched. Culms branching, base 3.5-7.5 mm in diam., round in cross section, compressed near apex. Leaf sheaths persistent, closely convolute, green with hyaline shoulders, margins membranous, continuing behind straight awn. Male inflorescences with 2-10 spikelets, spathes persistent, shorter or as high as spikelets. Female inflorescences with 1 spikelet, spathes shorter than spikelets, persistent, coriaceous or cartilaginous, spikelets 10-25 mm long. Ovary bilocular with 3 plumose styles, free to base. Flowering time Mar., Apr. Fruit a dehiscent capsule; seeds white-ornamented.
