Plants straggly, often pendulous, usually consisting of single main growth with coarse, wiry roots. Stem 100–500 mm long, flattened. Leaves 3–9, 50–80 × 10–15 mm, dark green, unequally notched. Racemes pendulous or spreading, 60–180 mm long, thin, zigzagged, 3–20-flowered. Flowers, 12–15 × 8–10 mm, green or pale brown with reddish brown central patches on sepals and petals, and a white frontal patch on labellum. Sepals and petals widely spreading. Dorsal sepal 3–4 × 2 mm. Lateral sepals 5–7 × 1–1.5 mm. Petals 4–5 × 2 mm. Labellum 6–7 × 3–3.5 mm, green and white; lateral lobes c. 1 × 1.5 mm, curved outwards; midlobe short, fleshy; spur c. 7 mm long, curved away from column.
Widespread and common in rainforest, often growing on shrubs and small trees, but also on twigs of large trees. In southern areas of its range it mainly occurs in the lowlands, but in the tropics it is most common on ranges and tablelands; occurs rarely on mangroves. In some areas it colonises hoop pine plantations.
