Characteristics

Tree to 30 m tall. Bark thin, dark grey, persistent, shortly fibrous. Resting leaf buds large, globular, usually not as long as broad; scales rounded, obtuse, ±imbricate; a few apically recurving. Adult leaves with petiole 4-10 mm long; lamina linear, 8-25 cm long, 7-16 mm wide, acute, dark green; midrib slightly raised on upper surface, obtuse; 3 resin ducts present below vascular bundle; upper hypodermis continuous. Male cones cylindrical, 20-30 mm long, 3-4 mm diam., in groups of 1-4, sessile or on peduncles to 1 mm long; microsporophylls loosely imbricate, triangular, to 2 mm long. Female cones of 1 fertile scale with 1 or 2 ovules, solitary, axillary on peduncles 6-9 mm long; receptacle 9-12 mm long, fleshy, red at maturity, with 2 deciduous subtending bracts. Mature seed 10-15 mm long, 7-9 mm diam., dark red.

Well developed rainforests on a variety of sites; at elevations from sea level to around 1,000 metres. Coastal flats directly behind the mangroves, along streams, and on low mountain ridges, occasionally in patches of rainforest along streams.
