Characteristics

Shrub 1.5–6 m. tall; stems glabrous, the older ones covered with pale longitudinally fissured corky bark.. Leaf-blades lanceolate or narrowly oblong-lanceolate, 5–14 cm. long, 2–4 cm. wide, narrowed to an acute apex, cuneate at the base, mostly thin, glabrous; petiole 8 mm. long; stipules triangular, 3 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide, keeled, glabrous, ± persistent.. Flowers in sessile or shortly pedunculate inflorescences; peduncles up to 4 mm. long; bracts and bracteoles 1.5–2.5 mm. long, variable, those next to the calyx joined to form a truncate or bilobed cup, sometimes apiculate, never completely enclosing the bud, finely densely adpressed silky; sessile inflorescences form a globose nodal cluster up to 1.5 cm. diameter.. Calyx enclosing the bud in young flower, with similar indumentum, the sub acute apex slightly toothed, splitting into 2 lobes as the flower develops; tube 1 mm. long, limb 4 mm. long.. Corolla creamy white, glabrous or sparsely puberulous; tube funnel-shaped, 4 mm. long; lobes oblong-ovate, 2–2.5 mm. long and wide, rounded to an apiculate apex.. Style densely hairy save at base, 6 mm. long; stigmatic lobes ± 1 mm. long.. Fruits ripening from white to purplish black, subglobose or depressed globose, often somewhat didymous, 7–10 mm. long and wide, puberulous around the persistent calyx base.
