Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae > Polysphaeria

Characteristics

Slender spreading shrub 1.2–3.5 m. tall (see note after subsp. harleyi); stems glabrous, the older with grey fissured bark.. Leaf-blades usually narrowly lanceolate, or narrowly elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 2.5–16(–19) cm. long, 1.3–5.7 cm. wide, mostly slenderly acutely acuminate at the apex but sometimes obtuse or the actual acumen rounded to subacute, cuneate to almost rounded at the base, rather thin, glabrous; petioles 0.4–1 cm. long; stipules triangular, 1.5–5 mm. long, 2–5 mm. wide, keeled, often apiculate, glabrous or pubescent, deciduous.. Flowers not scented (?always), in sessile or shortly to distinctly pedunculate 3–8-flowered pubescent to glabrous inflorescences; when sessile the two at each side appearing as a single cluster; peduncles 0.2–1.8 cm. long; secondary peduncles 0–3 mm. long; bracts andbracteoles ovate-triangular, all rather similar, 1.5–3.5 mm. long, usually united into boat-shaped cups, acute, apiculate or caudate at the apex, mostly rather coarsely ± spreading pubescent or glabrous.. Calyx with similar indumentum; tube 0.5–2.5 mm. long; limb-tube 1.3–2 mm. long, usually with distinct but distant acute or apiculate teeth, or shallowly undulate-toothed or even ± truncate.. Corolla very pale lilac, white or pink-tinged, glabrous, slightly pubescent or usually puberulous all over with minute adpressed or slightly spreading hairs; tube 4.5–7 mm. long; lobes oblong-ovate to ovate, 1.7–2 mm. long and wide, obtuse or acute.. Style up to 1.1 cm. long, densely hairy; stigmatic lobes 1.5–2 mm. long.. Fruit often glaucous at first, becoming red-purple or black, subglobose, usually slightly compressed and obscurely didymous, 6–9 mm. long, 9–12 mm. wide, 7–8 mm. thick.. Seeds ± shiny, chestnut, hemispherical, 6–7.5 mm. long, 3.5 mm. thick.
