Rhizomes laterally compressed, 4–10 mm thick; internodes 1–6 cm long. Leaves 2 or 3 per shoot. Leaf sheath 5–14 cm long, with margins overlapping for c. 1/3 its length, becoming a hair-like mass after the blade is shed; ligule 1 mm long; auricles 1–2 mm long. Leaf blade flat, linear, 20–120 cm long, 4–6 mm wide; apex truncate and usually oblique; longitudinal veins 7–11; epidermal cells elongate with smooth margins, l:w 3–6; fibre bundles associated with epidermis only. Inflorescence of 2–4 spikes, each with 2–4 flowers; peduncle 10–20 cm long. Anther 3–4 mm long, 1.2 mm diam.; anther connective 4–6 mm long. Ovary 2–2.25 mm long, 0.8 mm diam.; stigma 1.7–2.2 mm high, somewhat papillose with 2 or 3 crests. Fruit laterally compressed, asymmetrically pyriform, 2.5 cm long. Seed slenderly ellipsoid, 15–20 mm long.
