Rhizome terete, 2–3 mm diam.; internodes variable in length, usually 2 long internodes, 2–6 cm long, followed by a series of short internodes, 0.5–2.5 mm long. Leaves 2 or 3 per shoot. Leaf sheath 5–20 cm long; margins overlapping for almost entire length; ligule 1 mm long; auricles 2–2.5 mm long; sheath fibre bundles sparsely distributed amongst parenchyma tissue. Leaf blade biconvex in T.S., linear, 40–100 cm long, 1–2 mm wide; apex spathulate to rounded; longitudinal veins 5–7; epidermal cells rectangular with smooth margins, l:w 1.5–2.5; epidermal cells cross-section height: width ratio 1.5–2.5. Inflorescence with 3 or 4 spikes, each with 2 or 3 flowers; peduncle 30–40 cm long. Anther 3.5–4 mm long; anther connective 4.5–6 mm long. Ovary 1.75–2.5 mm long, 0.8–1 mm diam.; stigma 1–1.75 mm high, irregularly papillose. Fruit falcate, acuminate, 1.6–3.6 cm long. Seeds slender, falcate, 8–10 mm long.
