Rhizome terete, 1–3 mm diam.; internodes variable in length, usually 1 or 2 long internodes, 2–3 cm long, followed by a series of short internodes, 0.5–3 mm long. Leaves 1–3 per shoot. Leaf sheath 8–20 cm long, with margins overlapping for entire length; ligule 1 mm long; auricles 2–2.5 mm long; sheath fibre bundles abundant, distributed amongst parenchyma tissue. Leaf blade terete, 60–155 cm long, 1–1.5 mm diam.; apex spathulate; longitudinal veins 3–5; epidermal cells rectangular with smooth margins, l:w 1.5–4; epidermal cells crosssection height:width ratio 1.5–2.5. Inflorescence of 3–7 spikes, each with 3 or 4 flowers; peduncle 30–35 cm long. Anther 4–4.5 mm long, 1.3 mm diam.; anther connective 6 mm long. Ovary 3 mm long, 1 mm diam.; stigma 1–1.2 mm high, irregularly papillose with 3 lobes. Fruit ovoid with a recurved tip, 2–4 cm long. Seeds lanceolate to falcate, 1–1.2 mm long.
Occurs usually below 10 m deep, occasionally shallower, but more than 4 min high wave energy areas; in small clumps of pure stands or with other P.ostenfeldii species group.
