Characteristics

Rhizome laterally compressed, 3–8 mm thick; internodes 1–5 cm long. Leaves 1 or 2 per shoot. Leaf sheath 4–8 cm long, with margins overlapping for c. 1/2 its length, remaining intact after blade is shed (not becoming a hair-like mass); ligule 1 mm long; auricles 1–2 mm long. Leaf blade somewhat concave-convex, linear, 20–120 cm long, 4–11 mm wide; apex rounded or truncate; longitudinal veins 7–13; epidermal cells oblong with sinuous margins, l:w 4–12; fibre bundles more abundant with hypodermis than epidermis. Inflorescence of 3–5 spikes, each with 3–6 flowers; peduncle 10 cm long. Anther 3.45–4 mm long; anther connective 3.5–4.5 mm long. Ovary 1.5–2 mm long, 1 mm diam.; stigma 1.5–2 mm high, irregularly dentate with 2 or 3 crests. Fruit ellipsoid-terete, 2–3 cm long. Seed ellipsoid, 1.5–2 cm long.
