Characteristics

Leaves opposite (at least the lower 2 pairs) or alternate, sessile (on short side shoots, grading into bracts), or petiolate; mature leaves up to 6 x 3 cm., lanceolate to ovate; apex acute to acuminate; base cuneate to subtruncate; margin serrate, with 3(5) rounded teeth; lamina upper surface with scattered stiff hairs, lower surface with scattered stiff hairs on the nerves.

Inflorescences bisexual, on shortened axillary branches; bracts numerous, subsessile, intergrading with the leaves, up to 10 x 7 mm., elliptic-ovate, tapering to a c. 3 mm. long petiole-like base or sessile, margins entire, apex acute to rounded, lamina with scattered stiff hairs on both sides.
Male flowers apparently few, pedicels up to 1 mm. long, bracteolate, perianth c. 1 mm. in diam., 4-merous, with hooked hairs on the outside of the tepals.
Female flowers sessile, perianth completely fused, with 5(6) obscurely marked ridges and scattered stiff hairs on the outside. Stigma not observed.
Erect annual herbs up to 45 cm. tall; young branches and petioles with an indumentum of scattered, stiff hairs.
Stipules up to 3.5 mm. long, linear-lanceolate, with a narrow ciliate apex.
Achene dark brown, glossy, enclosed in the persistent perianth.
Petiole up to 3.5 cm. long.
