Plants 500–1,000 mm tall. Free part of leaf to 200 × 6–10 mm, green or black. Spike 100–400 mm long, 15–75-flowered. Ovary sessile, long, appressed, green or black. Flowers crowded, scented, 15–18 × 10–15 mm, green, brown or blackish, labellum lamina crystalline white, callus bright pink to red. Dorsal sepal 12–16 × 3–4.5 mm, curved forwards, sharply pointed. Lateral sepals usually fused but often free at base, erect or recurved, each sepal 11–15 × 2–2.5 mm, margins flat. Petals 12–15 × 1–2 mm, sharply pointed, incurved. Labellum sessile, sharply recurved near middle (sometimes gently recurved), 8–15 × 6–7 mm, margins crinkled and delicately fringed. Callus prominent, with deeply toothed fringed margins, extending nearly to labellum apex.
Widely distributed and often locally common; found growing in a wide range of habitats from seasonally wet flats, depressions, swamps and drainage lines to freely draining soil in woodland, open forest, coastal scrub and heath.
