Plants 400–900 mm tall. Free part of leaf stiff, to 300 × 5 mm, often purplish. Spike 80–200 mm long, 6–70-flowered. Ovary sessile, long, green, appressed to stem. Flowers moderately crowded, strong spicy scent, 8–10 × 8–10 mm, yellow to yellowish green or greenish brown, sometimes with reddish markings, labellum lamina green with white margins, callus green (rarely flowers wholly dark green with white labellum). Dorsal sepal 6–8 × 3 mm, incurved. Lateral sepals fused, hooding labellum, each sepal 6–8 × 3 mm. Petals 6–8 × 3 mm, incurved to spreading. Labellum sessile, erect at base, gently recurved near middle, 5–7 × 3–4 mm, margins crinkled or frilly. Callus extending just beyond labellum bend, base broad, margins wrinkled.
Widespread, but generally uncommon, often occurring as scattered individuals or in small groups; mainly found growing in areas of reliable high rainfall such as montane woodland in well-structured mountain loam, moist to wet medium to tall forest in clay loam, heathy forest, coastal scrub and heath in freely draining sand and gravel.
