Plants 400–1,000 mm tall. Free part of leaf to 200 × 5–8 mm. Spike 80–150 mm long, 20–65-flowered. Ovary shortly stalked, green. Flowers compact, well-spaced to crowded, scented, 8–11 × 6–8 mm, greenish to reddish brown or red, petals with pale margins, labellum white or pink, callus green to reddish. Dorsal sepal 5.5–7.5 × 4.5–5.5 mm, usually incurved close to column. Lateral sepals free, 7.5–8 × 2–2.5 mm, erect to recurved, nearly parallel. Petals 6–7 × 1.5 mm, blunt, porrect to incurved. Labellum shortly stalked, diamond-shaped, 5–6 × 5–6 mm, sharply recurved near middle, base deeply concave, suddenly tapered to short apical tail, margins crinkled. Callus broad, channelled, shiny, warty, horseshoe-shaped, ending just beyond labellum bend.
Relatively widespread, but very disjunct and sometimes locally common; found growing in grassland, heathland and grassy or heathy forest in freely draining to moisture-retentive sand and blackish loam; it's occasionally found growing among reeds in shallow water.
