Characteristics

Perennial tree or shrub, 2-5 m high; much branched; indumentum of short, simple hairs; young branches and branchlets puberulous; nodes prominent. Leaves soft, thin-textured, ovate or subrhombic, 20-50 x 10-35 mm, base cuneate, apex broadly tapering to rounded, margins entire or subdentate in upper half; glabrous to sparsely puberulous on both surfaces, pungent smell when crushed; petioles slender, 12 mm long. Inflorescences terminal, cymes racemose on slender axis. Flowers whitish, aromatic. Calyx 2-5-toothed; tube cup-shaped. Corolla with short tube; lobes asymmetric, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed. Fruit a pear-shaped drupe with a bony endocarp, pyrene 4-locular, loosely held in persistent calyx. Flowering time Sept.-Feb.
