Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Verbenaceae > Priva

Characteristics

Perennial branched herb with procumbent and ascending stems 20–60 cm. tall, sometimes even ± mat-forming; young stems pubescent with sparse to dense greyish or brownish ± viscid hairs.. Leaves ovate-triangular or ovate-oblong to oblong, 0.5–6 cm. long, 0.4–4.5 cm. wide, mostly ± rounded at apex or shortly acute, truncate and abruptly cuneate or gradually cuneate at the base, mostly sessile or petioles ± 2(–5) mm. long, crenate-serrate with obtuse or ± acute teeth or rarely somewhat lobed at base, ± scabrid with tubercle-based hairs and ± viscid pubescent above; similar beneath with longer hairs mostly on the ± prominent nerves.. Inflorescences 8–24(–35) cm. long, many-flowered but ± lax at base; bracts subulate to ± rhomboid, 1–3 mm. long, up to 1.2 mm. wide, acuminate, with white hairs; pedicels ± obsolete or up to 1.5–2 mm. long in fruit.. Calyx tubular, 5–8 mm. long, ± 3 mm. wide, 5-ribbed, obscurely 5-toothed, densely pubescent with short hooked viscidulous hairs and interspersed longer tubercle-based hairs.. Corolla white, pink or magenta-pink; tube cylindric, 0.8–1.2 cm. long, slightly curved, funnel-shaped near apex, glabrous outside, hairy inside, ± twisted at base; limb ± 2-lipped, 5-lobed, the lobes ± 2–4 mm. long and 2–3 mm. wide.. Ovary 1.3 mm. long, obscurely 4-lobed, 4-locular; style ± 6 mm. long.. Fruit compressed-subglobose, including the completely enveloping calyx, 5–6 mm. long, 5–7 mm. wide, the calyx indumentum persisting but now more distinctly uncinulate rendering the fruits burr-like; schizocarp flattened, oblate-spheroid, composed of 2 joined dry 2-locular cocci, each 4 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, the backs and sides densely echinate with short stout straight puberulous spines 0.4–1 mm. long save on the margins of the commissures where the spines are much reduced or reduced to ridges; ventral surface excavated..
