A dwarf rhizomatous shrublet with an extensive subterranean, horizontally spreading branch system from which numerous short, erect, usually unbranched stems, 150-350 mm in height, arise; the whole shrublet forming a loose, tufted mat up to 1.5 m in diam. Stems simple (rarely branched), erect, glabrous, 3-5 mm in diam. Leaves glabrous, ascending, linear and subrevolute to linear and flat, 120-250 mm long, 2-8 mm wide, tapering in petiolar region, apices acute to acuminate. Inflorescences globose in bud becoming shallowly crateriform, 30-45 mm in diam., overtopped by surrounding leaves. Involucral receptacle conic-acute, 12-15 mm m diam., 8-10 mm high. Involucral bracts 5-6 seriate, glabrous (margins occasionally minutely ciliate); outer series ovate-acute, imbricate, 6-10 mm long, 5-8 mm wide; inner series oblong to narrowly oblong, widely splayed at anthesis, concave and incurved, 15-25 mm long, 5-8 mm wide, apices rounded. Perianth strongly adaxially arcuate, 22-28 mm long; tube 6-8 mm long, inflated, glabrous externally but inner distal margins densely tawny-villous; limbs 8 mm long, narrowly elliptic, acuminate, tawny velutinous. Anthers 4, subsessile. Style 25-28 mm long, adaxially curved, almost at right angles, very sparsely hispid in the middle but glabrous distally and proximally. Pollen presenter linear-filiform, 5 mm long, scarcely differentiated from style. Ovary obconic, 3 mm long, covered with 10 mm long, tawny trichomes. Hypogynous scales irregularly ovate, often bilobed. Flowering takes place between July and October, reaching a peak in early September.
