Characteristics

Erect shrub, 2-4 m in height, with a short trunk up to 100 mm in diam. Stems upright, 4-6 mm in diam., glabrous. Leaves ascending, narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate, 50-75 mm long, 5-15 mm broad, apices rounded to obtuse, only rarely acute; glabrous. Inflorescences obconic on opening, becoming broadly obconic later, 70-80 mm long, 50-70 mm in diam. when open. Involucral receptacle concave, sunken, 8-15 mm in diam. Involucral bracts 5-6 seriate; outer series tightly imbricate, ovate, acute, 8-14 mm long, 8-10 mm wide, glabrous, bright green in live state with distinct brown scarious margins; inner series widely splayed, oblong-ovate to linear-lanceolate, concave, acute, 25-40 mm long, 5-15 mm broad, glabrous but occasionally minutely ferruginously puberulous proximally. Perianth 55-65 mm long, straight; tube 15 mm long, quadrangular, ridged, glabrous proximally becoming sparsely ferruginously setose distally, inner distal surface of tube densely ferruginously setose; claws slender, very sparsely ferruginously setose; limbs 18-20 mm long, linear acute, glabrous. Anthers 4, subsessile. Style 55-60 mm long, adaxially arcuate, glabrous. Pollen presenter filiform, straight, 15-18 mm long. Ovary obconic, 3 mm long covered with 8-10 mm long, straight trichomes, pink in live state, later becoming tawny. Hypogynous scales ovate, acute, 2 mm long, thick and fleshy, yellow. Flowering takes place throughout the winter months, from as early as April until as late as October, but the peak of the season is in May, June and July.
